On May 25, 2007, 15-month old Devin was diagnosed with Isodicentric 15 Syndrome. Commonly referred to as dup15q Syndrome, it is a chromosome abnormality in which a child is born with extra genetic material from chromosome 15. Devin has 47 chromosomes, instead of the normal 46. The extra chromosome is made up of a piece of chromosome 15 that has been duplicated end-to-end like a mirror image.
Devin
is still non-verbal and the reality is he may never talk. He will
require lifelong therapies and will have physical and developmental
delays his entire life; and because dup15q in itself is one of the rare
chromosome abnormalities our future is still quite uncertain. Devin's
syndrome weighs heavy on us, but he lights up our life every day with
his smile and mischievous eyes! – With faith in God and our family's
support we will get thru it all... one mile at a time with a smile in our hearts!
